The 5102 Transverse Electromagnetic (Crawford) Cell is a 2ft large rectangular transmission line end tapered 24” (60cm) to a coaxial line. Normally, one end is terminated in a precision 50Ω RF load ( of sufficient wattage) whilst the voltage at the feed end is accurately determined over the usable frequency range. The cell is also a shielded enclosure providing electrical isolation for various tests. Both the upper and lower halves may be used to obtain accurate field readings by dividing the rms voltage on the septum by the septum to floor distance in metres. A principal function of the TEM cell serves as a calibration source for field intensity. Hence, field strength meters can be placed inside (if size permits) to check readings. The cell of course can be used as a simple small chamber for straight immunity work. Above 300MHz a calibrated field probe would be needed to monitor the actual field.
Construction: The cell is constructed of aluminum. The body and door are .125” aluminum sheet and the septum is .190” aluminum sheet. The taper to cable connection (transition B) is machined aluminum. Dielectric support rods are 1” (2.5cm) Delrin. Septum to surface distance is 12”. Hence, EUT size: 4” sq. ideally. A connector pack with two plugs & leads is provided to power up devices within the cell. Other access holes are provided about 30mm in diameter.
