SECTION 500   “AT A GLANCE”

Section 500 Content Consideration

WARNING   Many of the items in this Section are designed to operate at high, possibly LETHAL voltages and energy levels, create sudden audible discharges and require a high degree of responsibility, care and commonsense in their use.  Normal high voltage safety practices MUST be exercised when using this equipment.

Untrained operators, wearers of electronic life support equipment   (pace-makers etc), personnel with heart problems, nervous disorders and similar problems should not be allowed to operate these items or be present during their use.

Under the sub section Signal Generators, sweepers & Noise sources the signal generators can be divided into the synthesized devices (whose frequency is generally very stable & as accurate as the generator’s own clock) and the older analogue devices with for example cavity oscillators. These older cavity devices although characterized by offering a relatively short frequency span produce a pure single frequency without numerous spurious signals. They also enable the operator to simultaneously adjust the frequency & level. This, with a non-computerised immunity system can be an advantage. Nearly all the digital generators are under bus control. Included in this sub section are impulse generators whose pulse rise time allows a signal to be observed up to a Gigahertz on all peak detector analysers. For the low frequencies items 501 & 502 provide a couple of function generators. There are also selections of white noise sources under the York CNE group. These will give a continuous white noise spectrum of signal up to 1 or 2GHz. A couple of low frequency power sweepers and oscillators have been included within this section. When considering any of the microwave generators they can be delivered with the appropriate output connector suited to their range of operation,. i.e. precision N or K. Please specify to the hire department when ordering. There are a range of microwave cables and adaptors in section 700 to assist in systemizing the set-up.

Sub section Harmonic & Flicker, Transient, Burst & Surge generation embraces a wide range of Schaffner LF immunity testing equipment along with the Laplace AC2000. e.g. the harmonic & flicker test apparatus for 61000-3-2/3. The Schaffner units mainly cover “Surge & interrupt”, “fast transient/ burst generation”& “Data line interference simulation” tests.

Coupling De-coupling Networks from the Richard Marshall Company. These are prefixed with RML-S46XXX and come with their own Cal jig, a full set of I/O cables to match the design of the CDN, earthing lead and ground plane. A more detailed write up on these is included within the general catalogue or web site. There are also the Schaffner range of CDNs which are matched to some of the Schaffner generators listed within the section. As a supplement to the above groups a further three CDN’s are available from MEB which is now part of the Schaffner group. Look at the web site for details on CDNs.

Sub section ESD, Transient  & Surge mainly with laptop & s/w  contains many of the Haefely designs very similar to the Schaffner group, covering such functions as “burst testing”, “mains surge generation” & “interference simulation”. It is within this sub section that the ESD guns from various manufacturers have been listed. Although the Haefely units can be operated from the front panel, laptops are offered with the winpats software installed ready for use.

Sub section Modular units embracing ESD & generally 61000-4-x  are available under Items 581 (UCS-500-M) and 582 (CWS 500). These are new to the list and makes an attractive economic alternative to many of the separated items offered above especially conducted immunity. The CWS 500 puts a signal generator, a power amplifier & a power meter plus coupler all in one box. It embraces testing to standards IEC61000-4-6/ENV 50141. The output power from the amplifier within is approx 75Watts. The customer then adds the appropriate CDN, 6dB pad & 50 Ohm load to complete the working passage. Similarly, the UCS-500M does numerous tests from EN61000-4-2 /4/8/9/11/12/29 and all contained within one single box. Many of the low frequency test systems have software to enhance or speed up the test. This can be added by choosing a sub-item, i.e.item 581E.
