Current Probe and Clamps

EMC Hire supplies a range of current probes to help Engineers measure a wide range of current flows in power supplies and electrical circuits, covering AC/DC or just AC or DC current.

EMC Hire supplies primarily clamp-on current probes, otherwise known as magnetic core current probes. This is an indirect technique in which the probe is clamped around the current-carrying wire or conductor and makes non-contact current measurements.

The probe gives a measurable voltage signal proportional to the amplitude of the measured current. The advantage of this technique is that it is non-invasive and isolated, so the probe is not electronically connected to the device under test.

The advantages of using clamp-on current probes include:

  • Galvanic isolation between the probe and the device under test
  • They can be placed anywhere on the current path without breaking the circuit
  • Low insertion impedance

How do I select the correct current probe?

To ensure you select the correct current probe for your application, assess the following questions:

  • Are you measuring AC, DC or AC riding on top of DC?
  • What are the minimum and maximum current ranges you are aiming to measure?
  • What is the common mode voltage of the current signal you’re measuring?
  • How fast is your target current signal?
  • What is the size of the device / Cable diameter under test?
  • How many current probes or voltage probes will be used at the same time?
  • What is the maximum voltage and current output of the conductor to be measured?
